”You cannot have a meaningful life without having self-reflection.” ―Oprah Winfrey
If you want to move forward into the new year (and life in general!) with awareness and insight, you'll want first to look back to see how far you've come.
That's what reflection is all about. It's developing the self-awareness that helps you connect everything you've done and learned in the past twelve months.
If you dive straight into planning your future, you'll miss out on all the learning and knowledge the past year has gifted you.
What can you do with this information?
you're more likely to make unnecessary or same mistakes
learn more about what went well and improve from what went wrong
creates an opportunity to celebrate all your wins - small + big
notice where you felt most connected and inspired so that you can do more of that
think about the challenges, what you learned, and how you can make better decisions next time
By self-reflecting, you get to process your thoughts, feelings, and actions and understand why you feel the way you right now. You get to see where you've been - accept it, celebrate it and create your future from a place of knowledge and intention.
How to get started:
Close your eyes, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Do this a few times until you feel at ease and aware. After you feel relaxed and clear, think about the last year. Once you've reflected in your mind, grab a pen and answer these questions openly and honestly. This exercise is for your eyes only! Forget about perfection and let the words flow out of you and onto the paper. You can also download my free worksheets here!
Some questions to ask.
When you think about this past year, what brought you joy ? Make a list - go wild!
What are some specific moments that made your heart sing?
What did you embrace this year?
List three things that you're most proud of this year— personally or professionally.
How did you celebrate your wins (small + big) this year? If you didn't - how could you do it next time?
